All of you know at least one story written by Charles Dickens (1812-1870): A Christmas Carol.
It is the perfect example of Dickens's work: a slightly mysterious atmosphere, dirty London streets, a clear difference between classes (rich and poor), memorable characters. Also, Dickens tried to draw his readers' attention to the situation of the poor (and managed to make a difference). Basically, Dickens is partially responsible for our 20th-21st century view of Victorian England.
Dickens was, in a way, the first real bestseller author in the English-speaking world. He held 'readings and book signings' throughout England that were extremely popular.
In the show we are going to see, Pip Utton plays Charles Dickens as he is growing older and preparing for such a lecture. He reflects on his fame, growing older, and the social injustice in the country.
To prepare yourself for the show - so you know a little bit what Dickens is talking about - I suggest you read up a little bit on the man and his work on the following websites ánd watch a few video clips from some of the many film and tv adaptations of his novels:
